This paper was written in 2004. Nonetheless, the totality of its contents seemed appropriate to be included on this newly created Website. There have been many scientific discoveries since this paper has been written that are not updated herein.
The contents of this monograph are not by intent, based upon any religious or non- religious philosophies. It is a compilation of many scientific facts correlated with many documented human experiences. The conclusions in this document are strictly the author’s.
Our present Universe came into existence some 13.7 billion years ago, the so called The Big Bang, or as another paradigm suggests, Initiation and Inflation. Almost immediately, Quarks, the first manifested subatomic particles coalesced into the first “stable structures”, the protons and neutrons. Shortly thereafter, the protons congealed to form the nuclei of the lightest elements. Some 300,000 years later these nuclei captured free streaming electrons, and the first stable element, Hydrogen, had manifested. The second element to evolve, Helium added a single neutron to its electron capturing nuclei. All matter in the universe evolved from these basic ingredients. From these humble beginnings, all of the matter seemed to inherently possess an evolutionary propensity to become more and more complex, and to have the primal capacity to maintain an evolving stability. This evolving ability seems to have continued, as matter became increasingly complicated. I have termed this evolutionary propensity, SURVIVAL CONSCIOUSNESS.
It is conjectured that about a billion years later with the expanding universe having substantially calmed down from its frenetic beginnings, galaxies, stars, and planets began to emerge from the gravitationally bound clumps of the primordial elements. Our Sun, a 5 billion-year-old star, and its entire captive solar system probably manifested from the remnants of an exploding star. The reason for this speculation is that the solar system was congealed from an exploding star is because of all of heavy elements contained in the structures of our solar system. Stars and their planets that are not formed from the remnants of exploding stars do not contain the heavier elements, some of which are important in the formation of living entities.
Our 4.45-billion-year-old planet has shown fossil evidence that bacterial type cells existed in our primitive oceans at the least 3.5 billion years ago. These simple self- replicating water borne cells gave rise to this entire planet’s animal and plant species presently living or extinct. These primitive life forms were probably preceded by replicating molecules that eventually evolved into membrane enclosed bacterial type entities.
All of the countless species whether alive or extinct exhibit or had exhibited the abilities to replicate their own kind, gather their food, have escape strategies from predators, heal their injuries, and to adapt to their changing environments. These abilities are seen in the most primitive species of plants and animals. These are species without brains, nervous systems, organs, etc. Microorganisms, single celled protozoans, and very primitive metazoans all have these strategies for their existence. Of course, all highly evolved metazoan species exhibit these abilities. This phenomenon, Survival Consciousness, seems to be built into our evolutionary continuum starting with the first stable elements shortly after our universe came into existence.
It is apparent that species can exist with or without brains and organs and still be able to fulfill a recyclable existence. How can we relate this phenomenon to our own highly evolved human species? Does our brain manifest our consciousness or was the consciousness of our evolving existence long present before we attained brainpower? To find at the least a speculative explanation to these questions, we are now obliged to go back to examine what we are composed of. What is the composition of every thing that has manifested in this universe? What are the nature and/or essence of matter? What are the nature and/or essence of consciousness?
It has been recently been verified that the total universe is made up of completely invisible; 73% of Dark Energy, 22% of Dark Matter, and the remaining 5% visible manifested matter. That is, what we see and can easily measure make up only 5%. At this time with our sophisticated scientific inquiries it remains that the composition of the major parts of our universe are unseen and unknowable. Our recognizable 5% manifested existence constitutes our reality. However, when examined closely this 5% resolves itself into a mystical quandary. The simplest element in our universe, Hydrogen, is unknowable at its essence level. The single electron that spins near light speed around its nucleus is at a relatively unfathomable lengthy distance from that nucleus that contains 1 proton. The proton has now been determined to be manifested by 3 subatomic particles called quarks. The neutron that resides in addition to the proton in the next manifested element, Helium, is also composed of a different arrangement of 3 quarks. The essence of quarks is presently unknown.
The 80 year old science of Quantum Mechanics deals with the enigmas of atomic and subatomic realms, wherein the “Principle of Uncertainty” is a valid provable concept. The exact essences of these realms are not viewable and can only be demonstrated by cartoon drawings. Nonetheless, there are quantum experiments that show both electron and photon can be in two or more places at the same time. To further frustrate scientists, in the exacting concepts of the subatomic world, Quantum Mechanics, cannot be equated with the largest world of the grandiose universe. However, a relatively new science called “String Theory” mathematically solves the problems of equating the smallest aspect of subatomic world and the largest world of gravity, galaxies, stars and the like.
According to string theory, the universe in made up of tiny strings whose resonant patterns of vibration are the submicroscopic origin of particle masses and forces. String theory also requires extra space dimensions that must be curled up in size to be consistent with our never having seen them. Nonetheless, a tiny string can probe a tiny space. As a string moves about, oscillating as it travels, the geometrical form of the extra dimension plays a critical role in determining resonant forms of its vibration. Because the patterns of the string vibrations appear to us as masses and charges of elementary particles, we conclude, that the geometrical size and shape of the extra dimensions determine these fundamental properties of the universe. This far-reaching insight of string theory predicts that besides the 3 dimensional world plus space-time that we are familiar with, there are 7 other curled up dimensions. A further refinement of string theory has concluded that strings can also be in imbedded in massive membranes, and this aspect of string theory is named M Theory. This theory for the first time solves the problem of the long sought after “Unified Field Theory”, also known as T.O.E., The Theory Of Everything. There is presently two major scientific efforts, one at Fermi Lab in the USA, the other at Cern in Europe, to find other dimensions in their collider’s experiments.
The aforementioned facts portend that we live in a “UNKNOWABLE MUTI- DIMENSIONAL METAPHORIC UNIVERSE”.
Therefore, the smallest parts of our known manifested universe (5% of the total universe), that is, its essence, is at this time in our evolutionary history, is unknowable. And, as stated before, the Dark Energy, (73% of the total) and Dark Matter (22% of the total), is unseen. There is a lot of unfathomable “SPACE” here and there. Can the essence of this space be related to the invisible Evolutionary Force that we have named SURVIVAL CONSCIOUSNESS?
THE INTENT OF THIS MONOGRAPH
It is the intention herein to relate survival consciousness to the most evolutionary advanced species on this planet, human beings. The scientific paradigm has always been that the evolutionary growth of the human brain allowed humans to prevail as the most highly evolved specie on planet Earth. It was deemed as a “fortunate genetic accident”, that the larger the brain, the more advanced the species. It is the contention of this paper to propose that the larger brain capacity came about by the evolving humans solving the problems of their immediate environment. Hunting, finding a myriad of food sources, finding shelters, inventing fire, inventing tools, fighting to save their lives, utilizing their exploratory senses, etc. These are examples of learned skills that come from the outside in, not the inside out. This is the awareness present in humans that we have taken for granted as only the function of the brain. It is not. This awareness is a total package of which our consciousness plays a vital role along with our brain.
The brain itself with multibillion neurons, astrocytes, and synaptic connections still has enigmatic essences in the way it functions. It is still a great mystery even after many decades of serious research. Several recent papers equate brain functions to Quantum Mechanics, while other research papers suggest that the activity in the human brain is related to String Theory. Therefore, its functional essence is unknowable at this time.Nonetheless, the brain’s true basic function may be that of a “Hard Drive”. The brain’s proven functions of running of the vital aspects of the human body, is also known to “Store Our Memories”. We contend that it is our consciousness that accesses our stored memories.
Let us now view other live entities that do not have brains, and seem to function miraculously. What are the driving forces or essences patterns that propel a human fertilized egg to evolve into total individual. The scientific paradigm states that our genes are responsible for this miraculous happening. However, our genes at the essence level are still at this time unknowable, other than metaphorically naming all of their observed parts. As part of genetic observation of protein producing parts, Introns, non-protein producing parts Exons, there is about 1/3 of material inside the genetic areas that are called pseudo- genes that are completely mysterious. What is the informational essence that allows bacterial species to adapt to hostile environments, cancer cells to form tumors, normal differentiated cells to function perfectly, etc.? There are countless examples of microorganisms, plants and animals that function perfectly without a centralized brain. We believe that this unobservable essence is a Survival Consciousness agenda that was a built into an evolving essence that came into existence in the original beginning of our Universe.
CAN WE GAIN SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE SURVIVAL CONSCIOUSNESS?
Is consciousness a function of the brain or is the brain a functioning aspect of consciousness? This question may be mute. Because the essence of the subatomic structures of the brain are at this time not understandable. Consciousness is a “Something”. Whether consciousness is coming from an unknown space within the essence surrounding our bodies, or within the unknown space within our brains, it is a presence that all human beings have. This awareness has always been part of human beings. Our individualized personalities, our belief systems, which are influenced by the myriad of the various cultures into which we may be born plays a substantial role in the life of human beings. It has always been suggested by Western medically civilized societies that this awareness is a direct function of our brains. I am in disagreement with that common declaration.
No one has proven with certainty that it is the brain that manifests our consciousness, our personalities, our myriad aspects of our behavior patterns, our free will, etc. NeuroScientists and Geneticists have arbitrarily charted areas of the brain and declared that this is the area of anger, that area love, here is the gene for schizophrenia, etc. Those declarations remind us of the dogma of Calvinistic Protestants, that everything in a human’s life is preordained. Areas of the brain have shown in many instances to change what was thought as their original functional domains. The dogmatic claims of geneticists may be obliged to be revised as outside consciousness input can change brain function dramatically.
There seems to be a “built in” phenomenon in human beings from all cultures over this planet, that there is an “Extra Something” that we possess that is more than our material bodies. Throughout the ages of past and present civilizations, this Extra Something helped organize countless religions, it also prompted mankind to build spectacular edifices to a single god or to a myriad of gods of an unseen, spiritual world. This phenomenon has been evidenced in ancient times wherein humans unrelated, and not in contact with any other cultures had exacting type rituals in burying their dead, providing their deceased brethren with materials for their after- life, and the like. These divergent cultures all have, or had praying rituals, and all of them believed in “Ghosts”. What are the odds?
HOW FAST CAN THE BRAIN RESPOND TO A 97 MILE-AN-HOUR FAST BALL?
I view all of the senses as the tools of our consciousness. It is this awareness outward viewing conglomerate that makes the initial decision, then informs the brain. During the heat of competition athletes make instantaneous reactions. In the case of swinging a bat at a 97 mile-an-hour fast ball, the reaction time is so fast that the brain could not possibly react to that situation. Only in retrospect can the player describe the pitch, as to its location and where it was hit. Simply put, consciousness first, brain second.
The mind-brain duality has been in question for millennia. Scientific revelations of the intimate connectivity of the sensory organs to brain tissues has promoted the ideas that all aspects of human behavior is brain initiated. Control by brain is inside out. However, If we place the senses as part of the awareness package of our consciousness, our instantaneous decision monitor, we can react to all external situations instantly. This seems to be the intuitive case when it comes to the awareness of human beings. That is from the outside in.
THE FOLLOWING ARE EXAMPLES OF CONSCIOUSNESS THAT CONNOT BE EXPLAINED BY BRAIN FUNCTION. THE MATERIALS CONTAINED IN THESE EXAMPLES ARE PRESENTED IN A FORMAT AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO MINIMALLY EXPLAIN THE CONTENTS THEREIN. MORE INFORMATION CAN BE OBTAINED ONLINE:
The phenomenon of possession has puzzled humanity for thousands of years. Recognized by many Christian Faiths, it has prompted a myriad of protocols to rid the afflicted individuals with this problem. The phenomenon recognizes that another invisible separate consciousness has invaded the mind-brain of the unfortunate victim. Important to the theme of this paper is that a consciousness can be a separate entity from our brain. In this case, a malevolent consciousness is the invading entity. There are protocols rid this consciousness of the human host.
In the light of this possession context, we can further review clinical cases of multiple personalities. Deemed solely pathological, it is sometimes seen that the new personalities are benevolent. There are instances wherein these individuals display physical changes as well as personality changes. Blood tests were found to differ with each personality in some cases. Medical afflictions were seen to attenuate or change in multiple personality patients depending on which consciousness shows-up. There should probably be a revised medical approach to these unique individuals, viewing the clinical displays as outside consciousness invasions.
Dr. Stanley Krippner, Ph.D. is internationally known for his pioneering work in the scientific investigation of human consciousness, especially parapsychological phenomena and altered states of consciousness. He has written over 500 articles, authored, and co- authored over a dozen books. He and his co-author, Alberto Villoldo wrote the following report from G.L Playfair, a psychic researcher: Maria, a Brazilian native performed complex surgical procedures in an adobe shack in a well-lighted room. She claimed to be possessed by a long dead Austrian surgeon. She performed these feats with the crudest of instruments in a total trance. Her eyes seemed to be closed. She claimed no memory of her performances other than getting instructions from the dead surgeon. She allowed onlookers to see her surgical procedures, and the healing of her patient seemed remarkable.
It seems apparent that free floating consciousness entities are able to invade the bodies and consciousness of many individuals. I will now present well recognized phenomenon that has been dividing the spiritual communities and the medical communities for decades. The point in question, can the consciousness leave and return to an individual’s body?
OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE (OBE)
The out of body experience typically involves a sensation of floating outside of one’s body, and, in some cases, perceiving one’s body from a place outside one’s body. There is a great amount of literature about this phenomenon for an interested reader. However, I shall relate two scenarios told to me personally by my patients.
Karen, who had been very faithful in returning to my office every 6 months for her dental check-ups, had not shown up for over a year. She returned to my office thereafter. She was a mid-forty year old business executive with a great sense of humor. When I ask her where she had been she answered, oh I died! She proceeded to tell the following hair raising tale: Earlier that year she had a severe heart attack. She was rushed to the hospital, this was before there was open-heart surgery, and the technology at that time was to open the chest cavity and massage the heart back to life. During this life threatening procedure, she felt herself rise out of her body and was able to watch the desperate activity below. She further related that during this time she felt great, serene, pain free, and happy. She wanted to stay in this unusual state. However, apparently as her heart begin to beat again she felt herself being sucked back into her body. She related that she did not want to go back. As she was reentering her body her felt massive, severe pain. She made a good recovery. She was not a shy person. She opened up her blouse and showed me the massive cross of the healing scar that ran from her neck to her navel vertically, and beneath her total rib cage horizontally. The last thing she said was that she would never be afraid of dying.
Patricia, another patient, related that during the birth of her second child she had an out of body experience. She was in severe labor and when the decision was made that she needed a cesarean section, she simply left her body. She related that she felt that the doctors could do that procedure without her. She did not want to watch. She remembers floating around the operating room and looking at the clock. She floated back into her body and saw that the delivery was over.
NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE (NDE)
A near-death experience refers to a broad range of personal experiences associated with impending death, encompassing multiple possible sensations including: detachment from the body; feelings of levitation; extreme fear; total serenity, warmth; the experience of absolute dissolution; and the presence of a light which some people interpret as a deity.
Paranormal specialists and some mainstream scientists claim NDEs to be evidence of an afterlife, However, most of the scientific community regards such experiences as hallucinatory, or a chemical imbalance within the brain. Near-death experience can have tremendous effects on the people who have them, their families, and medical workers. Changes in values and beliefs often occur with the experiences after a near-death experience, including changes in personality and outlook on life, such as greater appreciation for life, greater compassion for others, a heightened sense of purpose, more self understanding, and a desire to learn.
Many NDE accounts seem to include elements which, according to several theorists, can only be explained by out-of-body consciousness. Some examples: A woman accurately described a surgical instrument she had not seen previously, as well as a conversation that occurred while she was under general anesthesia. A nurse removed the dentures of an unconscious heart attack victim, and was asked by him after his recovery to return them. It is difficult to explain in conventional terms how a unconscious patient could possibly recognize the nurse. A woman underwent surgery for an aneurysm reported an out-of-body experience which continued while her brain did not have any EEG activity.
These aforementioned accounts challenge the belief that consciousness is situated entirely within the brain.
Dr. William G. Role is an Oxford-educated parapsychologist on the faculty of the Psychology Department of State University of West Virginia. Over the course of his extensive career, he has written three books and more than two hundred articles on the poltergeist phenomenon. As an award-winning educator, he has personally witnessed many poltergeist activities.
A standard definition of poltergeist happenstance is: A poltergeist is a spirit or sometimes a disembodied energy: Likened to a ghost, they are more destructive and are known for throwing all types of items, and are usually found in homes and buildings. Often these destructive forces occur when unhappy teenagers are present or in the vicinity of the activity. Without anyone near the item, it is flung with great force in any direction, and often with total destruction. With unseen hands, lights go on and off, radios turn on and off and the like.
Dr. Roll wrote a book about fourteen year old, Tina Resch, whose Ohio home was thrown into chaos. Appliances turned themselves on without electric current, objects flew through the air, and furniture scooted across the floor. As time went on, Tina was propelled into a downward spiral that led to an abusive marriage, a divorce, and the birth of a child all before her twentieth birthday. Three years later she was charged with that child’s murder. She is serving a life sentence for a crime as controversial, mysterious, and complex as the accused herself, a crime she maintains she did not commit.
The case of the Rosenheim Poltergeist is one of the best-documented poltergeist haunting in Germany. In the law office of Sigmund Adam in 1967 strange phenomena began to occur. Lights would turn themselves off and on and swing, telephones rang without anybody apparently calling, photocopiers spilled their copier fluid, and desk drawers would open without being touched. The Deutche Post newspaper installed a phone monitor. Within five weeks these instruments recorded 6000 calls even though all the phones in the office were disabled. In one 15 minute period there were 46 calls sometimes at a rate that appeared impossible with the mechanical dialing system of 1967. In October 1967 all lightbulbs went out with a huge bang. Dr. Hans Bender, a renowned parapsychologist, a team of scientist and two physicists from the Max Planck Institute investigated this baffling case. After installing cameras and voice recorders they were able to discover that the events only took place when 19-year-old Annemarie Schneider, a recently employed secretary was present. Bender was able to document on video how the lights immediately started to flicker once she entered the office. It was claimed that a lampshade would swing violently when Ms Schneider walked beneath it. Ms Schneider, it was discovered had a recently serious personal relationship trauma, and also suffered from non-specific neuroses. Interestedly, once she was sent on vacation the poltergeist activity stopped. When she came back to the office the events started anew. She was dismissed from her position and there were no further poltergeist activities since then.
Worldwide, there have thousands of cases of hauntings for millennia. Ghostly apparitions can appear in homes, castles, cemeteries, aboard ships and old battlefields, as well as other places. Individuals from all cultures, and diverse ethnic groups have all at some time reported seeing, being attack by, and in general frightened by solid or identifiable fuzzy ghosts. There have been reported countless times of recently deceased ghostly apparitions appearing at the bedside of loved ones telling them that they are doing OK. It happened in my family. Herein are three famous documented hauntings.
THE ALAMO: In March, 1836, the president of Mexico, General Santa Ana and 4000 troops laid siege to the Alamo. The 11-day battle resulted in the deaths of most of the defenders of the Alamo. The Mexican loses were over 1600. General Santa Ana ordered the bodies of the slain Texans to be dumped into a large grave, and the Alamo to be torn down. When the Mexicans started to tear down the walls, ghostly hands protruded to stop them and they fled in fear. The Alamo still stands in the heart of San Antonio, and tourists staying in a nearby hotel have reported grotesque apparitions coming from the wall. There are other reports that a ghost can be see on the top of the Alamo wall walking back and forth. Screaming and yelling coming from the Alamo after hours has also been reported.
THE GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD: The battle of Gettysburg in early July of 1863, was a pivotal battle of the American Civil War, and ended with the lose of fifty three thousand men. Visitors to battlegrounds and adjacent areas have reported countless incidents with ghostly apparitions in the tourist hotels as well as in the woods and related areas. Though the reports are too numerous to list herein, I shall tell of one unusual happening. During the filming of the movie Gettysburg, many re- enactors would find themselves with some down time. Though the movie was not filmed on the battlefield, these extras would walk the battlefield with their uniforms. The men, admiring a particular view, were approached by a stranger who appeared from the brush. A rather haggard, dirty looking old man, dressed as a Union private, smelling from sulfur. Sulfur is the key ingredient of the black powder used in 1863. He walked up to the men and as he handed a few musket rounds, and said “rough one today, eh boys?” He turned and walked away. The re-enactors examined the musket rounds. When they looked up the man had vanished. The musket rounds were later authenticated as the original rounds that were 130 years old.
RESURRECTION MARY, CHICAGO’S ELUSIVE GHOST: There have dozens of encounters with the apparition given the name of Resurrection Mary whose reports started in the middle 1930’s. Motorists passing Resurrection Cemetery claimed that a young woman was attempting to jump onto the running boards of their automobiles. Not long afterward, the encounters began to move further away from the graveyard and closer to the O Henry Ballroom, in an area now known as Willowbrook. She was later seen on the nearby roadway and sometimes inside the ballroom itself. On many occasions, young men would meet a girl at the ballroom, dance with her the then offer her a ride home at the end of the evening. She would always accept and offer vague directions that would lead north on Archer Avenue. When the car would reach the gates of Resurrection Cemetery, the young woman would always vanish. More common were the claims of motorists who would see the girl walking along the road. They would offer a ride and then see her vanish from their car. These drivers could describe the girl in detail and nearly every single description precisely matched the previous accounts. The girl was said to have blond hair, blue eyes, and wearing a white party dress. Some more attentive drivers would add that she wore a thin shawl, dancing shoes, and that she had a small clutch purse. There have been numerous other reported encounters with this ghost. Some of them quite bizarre. They can be accessed on Google. There have been many Mary sightings during the 1970’s and 1980’s, however reports of Mary have slacked off but they have never stopped altogether.
DR. ELIZABETH KUBLER ROSS (DEATH & DYING)
Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (1926-2004), was a Swiss born psychiatrist and author of the groundbreaking book, “On Death and Dying”. She was the recipient of twenty honorary degrees and by July 1982 had taught 125,000 students in death and dying courses in colleges, seminaries, medical schools, hospitals and social work institutions. After graduating from the University of Zurich medical school in 1957, she moved to New York the following year. As she began her practice, she was appalled by the hospital treatment of patients who were dying. She began giving a series of lectures featuring terminally ill patients, forcing medical students to confront people who were dying. She often disagreed with the traditional practice of psychiatrists whose treatment relied on medications. In 1962 she accepted a position at the University of Colorado School of Medicine were she completed her degree in psychiatry. In 1965 she became an instructor at the University of Chicago Medical School, and undertook 39 months of classical psychoanalysis training. She developed a series of seminars using interviews with terminal patients who led to her writing her groundbreaking book, “On Death and Dying”. She wrote 20 additional books on this subject.
Dr. Kubler-Ross told the story that while working in her office one evening she was visited by the ghost of one of her patients that had died months earlier. Telling this story to some of her colleagues led to her being fired from the University of Chicago. It was just the excuse they needed to get rid of her as she created controversy at this conservative institution. She had a belief that the human soul could survive death. Although she did not start the hospice movement she was one of its greatest advocates, and was especially interested in helping infants and children with AIDS, to give them solace until their passing. She was also interested in out-of –body experiences, mediumship, and spiritualism. She was a pioneer that tried making the medical profession and the specialization of psychiatry to be more sensitive to their dying patients.
DR. IAN STEVENSON (REINCARNATION RESEARCH)
Dr. Ian Stevenson, the most respected researcher in reincarnation has collected the scientific data that appears to provide proof that reincarnation is real. Devoting over forty years for the scientific documentation of past life memories of children from all over the world, he has over 2500 cases in his files. Because his credentials are impeccable and his use of strict scientific protocols, both skeptics and scholars agree that these cases offer the best evidence yet for reincarnation. Dr. Stevenson, MD, a psychiatrist, published many scholarly papers before he began his epic paranormal research. He was the former head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia. He methods were to interview children from 3 to 5 years of age who claimed a former life as soon as they started to talk. There was an exacting questionnaire that was followed, namely: date of their demise, town where they lived, names of close and distant relative, descriptions of their illnesses, whether they were murdered, and the like. The data was further checked out and investigated as to the accuracy of the original interview. It was further made sure that the information given by the child could not have been told to them by closely related adults. Only when a great percentage of the strict criteria was meet, that particular case was termed “solved”. That is, neither Dr. Stevenson nor his investigating colleagues could negate the possibility that reincarnation could be ruled out. He published many books documenting many of these cases, and dozens of papers showing the scientific methodologies and their results. Ironically, his monumental work to this day has not attracted much attention, as he was reluctant to be interviewed. He believed that hypnosis, while useful in researching past lives, was less reliable from a purely scientific perspective. Nonetheless, the past life hypnotists did get the publics attention.
Dr. Brian Weiss, MD psychiatrist, orthodox Jew, was shocked when one of his hypnotized patients slipped back into a former life. Thereafter, he wrote books and went on the lecture circuit to further the public’s interest in the subject. Dr. Michael Newton wrote a best seller “Journey of the Souls”, his perhaps not too a scientific methodology of hypnosis produced a questionable study of “Life Between Lives”.
The following is my own experience with this fascinating subject. About 30 years ago, my dental patient, B.P., told me that she went to a prominent hypnotist that was visiting the Chicago area, in order to rid herself of her smoking addiction. During the hypnotic session she reverted back into a past life. She was so enthused about that incident that she decided to move to the city where that hypnotist lived in order to exploit this fascinating phenomenon. She had made a dental appointment about a year later saying that she was just visiting, and brought 3 tapes relating to her past lives adventures. At lunchtime I heard one complete tape and major parts of the others. There were 4 different characters on those tapes. The most prominent was an English teenage farm boy, Franz, who was poor, hard working, led a boring life, and whose big thrill was to go to the city. B.P. spoke on this tape in a boyish English accent. When Franz was asked who was the king, correctly named the monarch who ruled in the 17700s. The next character was a young French woman, who spoke with a French accent interspersed with what I took to be French words. There was a Civil War soldier and a woman who took care of cats in an Egyptian Temple. B.P. told me she had many more tapes and several filmed sessions. B.P. only had a high school education. I have not seen her since that day.
Human Beings, from diverse cultures, for millennia, have been guided by their own particular seers, shamans, mediums, psychics, clairvoyants, and the like. The innate belief in these individuals has continued to the present day even in sophisticated societies such as ours. Sylvia Greene, James Van Praag, and John Edward whom are television personalities, and gain their living by dispensing their alleged mediumistic gifts to their public have fascinated their audiences for years. Although each one of these performers has had possible fraudulent charges, they continue to have successful acceptance from the majority of their clientele. However there are two other individuals that must included in this category. They did not gain riches from their gift.
Edgar Cayce, (1877-1945), the ”Sleeping Prophet” gave over 14,000 readings while in an unconscious state, diagnosing illnesses, revealing lives lived in the past, and prophecies yet to come. Born on a farm in Kentucky, his psychic abilities apparently came early in life as he was able to talk to his late grandfather’s spirit, and often played with imaginary friends whom he said were spirits from the other side. Labeled as strange, his demeanor was kind, and his life’s mission was always to help others. Cayce would lie on a couch, and in a state of steep induced relaxed meditation would answer any question presented to him. When awakened from this state, he could not remember the questions nor his answers. For more than 40 years of these energy draining readings, Cayce discussed over 10,000 different topics, which was astonishing because Cayce had very little formal education. The non- profit Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) founded by Cayce in 1931 had members who narrowed down the topics and compiled the subjects into 5 major categories:
- 1. Health–related information. 2.Philosophy and Reincarnation. 3. Dreams and dream interpretation. 4. ESP and psychic phenomena. 5.Spiritual growth, meditation, and prayer.
Eileen J. Garrett (1893-1970) born in Ireland suffered a tragic childhood as both of her parents committed suicide shortly after her birth, and was adopted by an aunt and uncle. She became the one of the most respected mediums of the twentieth century. Her early life was replete with numerous tragedies, but she overcame these challenges to become a world- renown medium as well as a very successful magazine owner, book publisher, lecturer, and author. Her feats of mediumship and clairvoyance were legendary both in the United States and Europe. She had never displayed any ego relative to her psychic gifts; to the contrary she made numerous contacts with scientific communities. She subjected herself to intense physiological and psychological experimentation hoping that such testing might shed light upon the process of mediumship and pychism. She died without gaining any insight from these investigations. Her vast amount of documented mediumistic and psychic performances can be obtained online. Eileen Garrett was always searching for more information concerning the secrets behind the consciousness of the mind and its relationship to the physical organism.
Given the evolutionary chronology of the information contained in this paper, it is impossible to believe that human brains manifest human consciousness. The question of exactly at what dimension human consciousness manifests may never be answered given the limited technological queries of present day research. We have not solved finding the “essence” of any thing, the essence of the finite structures of the human brain included. Taking and reading brain MRIs show only gross structures, that have been anatomically named, but how they work on an essence level is, and for the time being, only conjecture. Geneticists and neuroscientist that dogmatically insists that human being’s genetic make- up produce our consciousness, personalities, and behavior patterns have a very limited, myopic view of our knowable and unknowable reality. This belief system limits humans to be automatons in our approach to living. Their dogmatic belief in the relevance of the DNA’s has led to medical diagnoses and prognoses that resulted in unreliable therapies. These paradigms in general have not been of much help even to patients suffering from brain damaging pathologies. What is considerably worse, are the emotional and mental problems that may only be manifested in the consciousness. Giving those individuals strong brain altering drugs will further exacerbate the total problem, as the impaired consciousness has to now deal with an impaired brain. It is no wonder that these medical problems have never been addressed with great therapeutic successes. In reality those DNAs stand for: D-Delutional, N-Naive, A- Arrogant, and S-Stupid. How consciousness interacts with the brain is still greatly mystifying. The brain seems to be the “Hard Drive”, storage of informational files that a healthy consciousness can access in brain healthy individuals.
The list of human experiences contained herein, namely: possessions, out-of-body (OBEs), near-death-experiences, (NDEs), poltergeists, hauntings, reincarnations, mediumship, and psychic phenomena, all strongly portend that there are a myriad of enigmatic goings-on relative to the human race.
The conclusion herein is that an evolutionary process has already occurred. That process is that SURVIVAL CONSCIOUSNESS HAS EVOLVED INTO “CONSCIOUSNESS SURVIVAL”. This portends that at some unknown dimensional level, human consciousness can survive the death of its human host. This monograph has shown a myriad of instances wherein consciousness is independent of it’s host brain during life, and apparently, also independent in the case of death. However, its existence-essence at this time in our evolutionary history is manifested on an unknown dimension.
